Certified Document Our – Story
Back in 2007 I was asked to produce a certified document. Immediately I felt anxious, I remember thinking “what is this”? Is this another way the “system” is going to inconvenience me and pick my pocket again. I was going through a separation, there had already been too many inconveniences and expences. I needed a certified document, a Certified True Copy of my passport for a pension valuation. Hmm I never knew a photo copier could be anything but truthful.
Good Fast and Cheap – Pick 2
I needed a certified document quickly. At that very moment an image of the sign in my car mechanic’s shop popped in my head. You may have seen it. As it relates to car service “Good, Fast and Cheap”
It goes like this: Pick 2. If you want your car service done Good and Fast then it won’t be Cheap.
DYI Certified True Copy
In the beginning I thought to myself that there might be a do it yourself alternative, but after searching online and finding no viable results, I realised that going to a professional was my only real option.
So, I bit the bullet and called a Lawyer, someone I thought would have the necessary forms at hand, and could certify my document quickly, but this wasn’t the case. The local lawyer office told me I would have to book an appointment. The earliest I could secure a time slot, was about a week away. Needing the document certified quickly, I called around for something sooner and found a ‘walk-in’ Notary service across town.
Reluctantly, I made the half-hour journey thinking it would be worth the drive. The ‘walk-in’ service ended up being more like the ‘waiting in a 2 hour line-up’ service. Not only was the process itself frustrating and inconvenient, but in the end it cost me $89. It was then that I realised there had to be an alternative to this stress inducing, expensive process. I felt compelled to find a solution, not only for myself (should I need another document certified in the future), but also for my peers who were surely destined to meet the same fate.
Originally I thought that only a Lawyer or a Notary could certify a true copy for me, but this wasn’t the case. With a little bit of research I discovered that there was actually a long list of individuals who could legally certify my document for me.
To my surprise, some were actually people I encountered on a daily basis:
Trusted members of my community
Even my daughter’s high school principal
I couldn’t believe how easy it seemed now, knowing I had lots of options for a local signature that did not come at a high price.
It was then that it became clear that the problem wasn’t in finding someone eligible to sign, but the issue came from securing the right form and completing it correctly. This is how the Lawyers and Notaries are able to hike up the price.
